The Most Beautiful Place in the World

Morning has broken Like the first morning, Blackbird has spoken Like the first bird. Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning! Praise for them, springing From the first Word. Eleanor Farjeon, “A Morning Song,” in The Children’s Bells Our spiritual and writing practice may include visits to sacred sights or time away on retreat. However, we need practices that can be used in our everyday life. We can’t rely on “special occasions and places” to fulfill our spiritual or creative intentions. We want to be able to make sacred pilgrimages within our hearts and minds, and within the … Continue reading

The Spiritual Writer: Spirit into Word and Action

Spirituality I take to be concerned with those qualities of the human spirit—such as love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of harmony—which brings happiness to both self and others. While ritual and prayer, along with the questions of nirvana and salvation, are directly connected to religious faith, these inner qualities need not be, however. There is no reason why the individual should not develop them, even to a highest degree, without recourse to any religious or metaphysical belief system. This is why I sometimes say that religion is something we can perhaps do without. What we cannot do without are these basic spiritual … Continue reading

How to Be Who You Already Are

Life is a journey of discovery and belonging. It is about making meaning from our experiences for ourselves while allowing the meaning we have made to change.  The active life is about being able to create and discover meaning in an ongoing way and not hold on to one meaning or we may miss an opportunity at hand. As Joseph Campbell put it, “If we are hanging on to the form now, we are not going to have the form next.” When we review our life and recall times that we experienced an awakening or an epiphany (either through someone else’s teachings … Continue reading

The Spiritual Writer

Sometimes the word “spiritual” trips us up. That can be a good thing – means we may be slowed down enough to ask, just what do we mean by spiritual? Religion often tells us what our spiritual experiences should be as well as how to have them. We take all sorts of actions in the name of some god or religious belief. This then causes uncounted suffering on people, animals and nature. So, I would steer away from organized religion in its attempt to arrange your heart and mind, and in its often insistence that you stay in line (or … Continue reading

Listen to Your Life

Want to experience success? Are you butting up against some resistance in your creative pursuits? Do you want to transform your difficulties? Start by taking a conscious look around you. Do a conscious (compassionate) inventory of your life. How and where are you stuck? Where do you feel the most fulfillment and joy? What brings up the most resistance? Where does the difficulty arise? What do you want (in comparison to what you are getting)? Your life is your mirror. When we live the questions and consciously take a look at our life, solutions appear within the context of our … Continue reading

Perseverance with an attitude.

Every kind of manifestation relies on our sticking with it, with our finishing what we started. Through our perseverance we achieve creative and spiritual states we would otherwise not experience. In fact, a lack of joyful effort, of sticking with “it” results in suffering and unhappiness. Our perseverance is all we have in the face of distractions, resistance and disappointment. Evidence points to perseverance being central to feelings of lasting satisfaction. Those who persevere with their commitments are happier and more satisfied, and more financially sound. When we are not joyfully participating in our creative and spiritual life, we are likely under … Continue reading

Unveiling The Story

This next series of my blogs will be on Spiritual Journaling and Creative Writing to accompany my class–  Spiritual Journaling: Writing Your Way to Enlightenment. The practice of journal writing for me has always strengthened my spiritual practice and improved my writing practice. For me the two paths are synonymous, hence, Spiritual Journaling. “Writing above all, is seeing clearly.”  Peter Mathiessen, Letters from the Wild You are welcome to join me and take your own pilgrimage using your journaling as a means to travel. Let’s begin with searching for a story. How willing are you to pay attention until the plot of the … Continue reading
