The Spiritual Writer: Spirit into Word and Action

Spirituality I take to be concerned with those qualities of the human spirit—such as love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of harmony—which brings happiness to both self and others. While ritual and prayer, along with the questions of nirvana and salvation, are directly connected to religious faith, these inner qualities need not be, however. There is no reason why the individual should not develop them, even to a highest degree, without recourse to any religious or metaphysical belief system. This is why I sometimes say that religion is something we can perhaps do without. What we cannot do without are these basic spiritual … Continue reading

An Old Dog With An Old Trickster

Early on in my life, I found myself at times inundated with certain dark thoughts that just seemed to appear randomly and out of nowhere. They would show up at different times in my life and interfere with an otherwise pleasant time. They didn’t seem to have any cause. Asking why they existed only generated more unhappiness on my part, so I decided to pay more attention to when they arose. Knowing that the problem is next to the wound, that the solution is within the question, I noticed how, if it weren’t for these random dark thoughts, I would … Continue reading

Aspiring from Within: The Power of Your Intentions

The practice of conscious intentions is not just a method of contemplation but a real means to influence our perceptions, emotions, thoughts and experiences. Intentions train our mind, and direct our experiences. Intentions have two aspects: the cognitive aspect of wanting to cultivate something, and the intentional actions themselves. These actions resonate directly with the held intention. Therefore, you will witness your intention within the resulting action and experience. We begin with a higher wish to cultivate a quality such as compassion, creativity, or dialogue. This wish is an internal one created through an intention such as: I maintain the spirit … Continue reading

Spiritual Healing & The Shaman’s Body

The mind, the breath and uplifting emotional states such as acceptance and compassion are powerful tools of healing. We can engage the energy body through breath, meditations and personal body rituals that wake up our own shaman’s body.     Fall is the transition time when the body is more vulnerable and often stressed than any other season. Fall is a good time to do a light seasonal cleanse. This is a good time to prepare for the winter season. It is always a “good time of year” to spend some time outdoors in the natural light. Also: Stay warm, … Continue reading

How to Be Who You Already Are

Life is a journey of discovery and belonging. It is about making meaning from our experiences for ourselves while allowing the meaning we have made to change.  The active life is about being able to create and discover meaning in an ongoing way and not hold on to one meaning or we may miss an opportunity at hand. As Joseph Campbell put it, “If we are hanging on to the form now, we are not going to have the form next.” When we review our life and recall times that we experienced an awakening or an epiphany (either through someone else’s teachings … Continue reading

Seeking A Higher Consciousness

We talk and write about raising our consciousness, and becoming more conscious, the consciousness of nature, the evolution of consciousness, the development of consciousness—all valuable discussions but when lacking action they are not truly sustainable concepts. Seeking higher consciousness can act like an opiate if we forget what really matters – our actions. Sending love to the earth is good but doing love is better. Sitting on the meditation cushion is good but compassion in action is better. Too often I hear superiority within this concept of “higher consciousness” – we humans claim a particular variety of it and then … Continue reading

Six Signs of Suffering

“As long as we live in the misperception of being a separate entity, we encounter frustration, confusion, difficulties and turmoil.” –Ken McLeod, Wake Up to Your Life All of our suffering can be linked to the illusion of separation that we experience on a personal level. Every separation we “see” in the outside originates in some inner belief of separation. Although this original belief took root from some life experience (a narcissist parent, a trauma, a lack of intimacy or bonding as a child, abuse, neglect, etc.,) it has now become part of our inner landscape. When our history teaches … Continue reading
