On most mornings I get in three rituals, so when I lay my head down at night I feel I have done well in self care. These three rituals attend to mind, body and soul. First, I meditate and hold a conversation with my Great Friend, then I write a bit,… and before morning gets too late I am on my (power) walk to the broken tree. If the morning doesn’t afford me time for all three, I find a way to do my walk before the sun sets. The broken tree is my “turn around” point on my walk. … Continue reading

The Gift of Meditation
My meditation practice began at the age of 16. At the time, I had to give up smoking pot to take up Transendental Meditation. One of my finest decisions. I did this practice for about 6 years. I found some aspects of the TM community disturbing, so I went on to learn Vipassana meditation. I took various teachings and went on regular 10 day retreats. Shinzen Young was my first Vipassana teacher. I explored Vipassana, mindfulness and other aspects of “calm abiding” meditation. Over the years I studied the Heart Sutra and inquiry meditation, along with my base practices of … Continue reading
The Spiritual Writer: Spirit into Word and Action
Spirituality I take to be concerned with those qualities of the human spirit—such as love and compassion, patience, tolerance, forgiveness, contentment, a sense of responsibility, a sense of harmony—which brings happiness to both self and others. While ritual and prayer, along with the questions of nirvana and salvation, are directly connected to religious faith, these inner qualities need not be, however. There is no reason why the individual should not develop them, even to a highest degree, without recourse to any religious or metaphysical belief system. This is why I sometimes say that religion is something we can perhaps do without. What we cannot do without are these basic spiritual … Continue reading
Talk To Me: Family Gatherings & Sacred Dialogue
Many of us will gather with family this week. Artful conversation with our self and others can make for a safe and uplifting experience even in the more edgy encounters. Here I share with you an excerpt from my book, The Zero Point Agreement on sacred dialogue. It’s the stories we tell and the conversations we hold, and how we hold them, that determine our experiences of each other. In each conversation we hold with someone there is a story being told. When we let our conversations be more an exchange of stories rather than of ideas–something beautiful happens. “Everybody … Continue reading
Seeking A Higher Consciousness
We talk and write about raising our consciousness, and becoming more conscious, the consciousness of nature, the evolution of consciousness, the development of consciousness—all valuable discussions but when lacking action they are not truly sustainable concepts. Seeking higher consciousness can act like an opiate if we forget what really matters – our actions. Sending love to the earth is good but doing love is better. Sitting on the meditation cushion is good but compassion in action is better. Too often I hear superiority within this concept of “higher consciousness” – we humans claim a particular variety of it and then … Continue reading
Perseverance with an attitude.
Every kind of manifestation relies on our sticking with it, with our finishing what we started. Through our perseverance we achieve creative and spiritual states we would otherwise not experience. In fact, a lack of joyful effort, of sticking with “it” results in suffering and unhappiness. Our perseverance is all we have in the face of distractions, resistance and disappointment. Evidence points to perseverance being central to feelings of lasting satisfaction. Those who persevere with their commitments are happier and more satisfied, and more financially sound. When we are not joyfully participating in our creative and spiritual life, we are likely under … Continue reading
