What I know to be true

What I know to be true is that nothing outside ourselves can heal the internal divide or bring us true and lasting happiness: not the perfect spouse, not the bestseller, not the most loving and skillful teacher. Not a best friend, not a lot of money, not the perfect vacation. This search out- side ourselves only strengthens our feelings of separation as we search for our happiness in this way.

“The kingdom of heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom.”

Of these ten bridesmaids five are prepared; their lamps are trimmed and stocked with oil. The other five are unprepared; so that when the bridegroom arrives they have to hurry out to get oil. By the time they do this it is too late; the others are already in the wedding hall and the door is closed. The parable concludes with Jesus’ words,

“So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour” (Matt. 25:13). James A. Sanford, The Kingdom Within
